*ONLY 2 AVAILABLE OF THIS CUSHION* All are one offs so will vary slightly but we can offer multiples of this design in this instance because they would have all been made from the same vintage kantha throw, please only order a maximum of 2.
These cotton kantha work cushion covers are made using vintage fabric saris in the age-old sewing tradition of kantha, where women would lay worn out fabric on top of each other and sew them together to create a new and useable piece. The effect is totally enchanting and takes a regional art form into a relevant and modern design. This throw is made by a very small business based in the textile city of Jaipur in Northern India. There are thirty employees and they are highly skilled in the art of hand-embroidery as well as hand-printing.
They receive paid time off for important festivals, such as Diwali and Holi, and the business supports a charity that encourages independence and equality in women. The company have also set up ecological measures such as a solar system to generate electricity. The nature of this lovely throw ensures that each one is completely unique and reversible with complementary patterns on both sides. Each throw tells a story with delicately mended patches, gorgeously narrative fading and the mixes of fabric are truly eclectic. These 'flaws' are not faults, but are part of their charm and indications of their previous life. Hang on a wall or as a curtain, as tradition dictates, revive a favourite old chair or cosy up a bed. Whatever you decide to do with it, be smug in the knowledge that you have a delightfully attractive unique bit of history in your possession.
