Vintage Fusion Kantha Quilt - 69
The vibrant mash of colours in this beautiful reversible fusion throw is a wonderful assault on the senses. It is handmade from vintage patchwork in the kantha tradition on one side, where women would ingeniously prolong the lives of saris by layering worn out ones on top of each other and hand-sewing them together to strengthen and re-use as bedlinen and cushions, and beautifully patterned fabric on the other. Each throw is a unique mix of old and new. Revive a tired old chair or sofa, or instantly brighten a bedroom by laying neatly on top of plain bedlinen.

This is a family run private business that has been going for 20 years and is owned by the head of the family. They supply us with vintage cotton sari's, cushion covers and duvet covers with crazy patchwork made from old embroideries and old cotton sari's, all are recycled materials. They employ 30 men and women directly and 1000 people indirectly, these are cottage workers. In this case a large proportion are from a western part of India called the West Zone, the majority of this land is very poor, infertile, desert land. All the company's products are produced in clusters, and they employ persons on a piece work basis but pay them more than government rates. This work is much appreciated and supports a region where there is very little work available. They also support these desert people by giving them education, religious books and study materials to their children.
