It is almost as if the maker of this velvet cushion had a change of heart halfway through and it gives it a lovely sense of yin and yang; a cushion of two halves. Similar to a tapestry, but in cotton velvet, the intricate pattern is picked out and highlighted in strategic places with a dainty gold thread. It’s an intriguing design, but it works and it works very well.
This textile manufacturer employs four hundred men and women, of which over half are cottage workers. Employees receive ES insurance towards free medical treatment for all the family, provident fund pensions and interest free loans for various health problems or towards marriage costs. They support several charities including SOS Children Village India, Save the Children and Oxfam and they use traditional handiwork techniques such as weaving, embroidery, cutwork, tie-dye, block and screen printing. Materials they use include wool, jute, seagrass, cotton and recycled materials such as denim, sweet wrappers and saris.
