Sometimes you need two hands, especially for fiddly make-up or hair applications. This free-standing brass framed mirror is not only useful in this respect, but looks good too. The simple handmade frame utters class on a traditional level and yet the understated appeal mixes and matches perfectly within boho eccentricity or compliments neat minimalism. Based in Moradabad, Northern India, more than two hundred people are involved in the medium-sized business that produces this mirror. Just over one hundred people work in the factory, and the remainder work from home with a further thirty sub-contractors. The business community has a strong family ethos with employees and owners sharing happiness and sorrow, side-by-side. Employees are supported financially through personal problems and also for the education and marriages of their children. All loans have 30% written-off as the owners feel that the most important thing that they can do for their staff is to support and treat them as people. Their products are mainly made by hand, with a small amount of machine input where necessary. Traditional skills are passed down through the generations and workers are able to hone such skills in order to earn a living. Every festival is celebrated at work as the company is closely connected to their wider local community. They employ eco measures such as harvesting rain-water and solar power and they are constantly striving to improve the working environment for their staff. The owners express their pride at being able to provide work for their staff and at both the maintenance and advancement of traditional methods of manufacture. Whatever your style of home decor, this is a truly versatile, attractive and practical addition.
