Handmade and unique, this tote bag is an individual work of art, designed in a large bucket bag style. This useful accessory is a gorgeous mix of old and new and is made from recycled and beautiful old embroideries, oversized pompoms and robust black linen. The short handles make it ideal for shopping, but they are also long enough for a shoulder bag. There is a zip pocket and inside, a soft black cotton lining that houses a zip pocket on one side and two pouch pockets on the other. This bag is a one-off piece of vintage patchwork in a modern and stylish design.
Supplier Info: The company that hand-makes this lovely item was founded in 1988 and their main product lines include beaded and embroidered items such as evening bags, photo albums, jewellery boxes and mirror pouches. They have a large factory and employ more than one hundred and fifty people directly, plus provide employment opportunities for a further one thousand families through the cottage industry. All employees are part of the Provident Fund retirement scheme, have employee insurance and paid maternity leave. They have also adopted four children and provide for their education, up-bringing and hobbies. This company aims to preserve the centuries old tradition of various hand embroidery techniques like Zardozi work, Aari work, Kutch embroidery, Lucknowi embroidery, and Kantha embroidery etc. There are stories behind each one, for example, Kantha, which in Sanskrit means rags, and it evolved out of a necessity to drape or protect against the cold. When the precious silks and muslins were worn out, instead of throwing them away, the women piled them in layers and stitched them together. It can rightly be called art of recycling.
